Slice After Slice

Remember all the hullabaloo a couple weeks ago about the closing of Joe's Pizza's corner location on Bleecker and Carmine in the West Village? Remember how one longtime patron, Bill Gutering, who had been going to Joe's since age 13, was quoted in the New York Post as saying, "I'm going to go out of my mind if this is another Starbucks or Blockbuster"?

Mr. Gutering can keep his wits about him. We at Slice have word that the location will be home not to a megagiant coffee chain or subpar video store but to another pizzeria. From an e-mail to us from Abitino's Pizza:

I would like to inform you that Abitino's will be opening up on the corner of Carmine and Bleeker Street, in the spot formerly known as Joe's Pizza.  We anticipate the grand opening will take place in late January 2005.

Looks horrible.

Abitino's has the look of "Pronto Pizza" redux. How the hell do they plan to make money if the rent is indeed $15K a month?

Looks bad! At least Joe's is still slinging slices up the street. I went there the other day; the pizza's the same.

I work in the fashion district on 7th ave (where Abitino's just opened in Times square) and live in Murray Hill (where they have another location for over 10 years) and I happen to LOVE their pizza. The owners are soooooo nice and I hope they do really well in this spot. All the best to them!

I look forward to Abitino's grand opening on Bleeker and Carmine streets! The company I work for exclusively orders pizza from Abitino's on 1st Ave and 52nd St. Their pizza is deliciously crispy and tasty! I've been to the 52nd street location many times and have always been satisfied with their fine pizza and great service. Now downtown will be able to have the same good pizza with people who really now how to serve up a slice of new york!
P.S. My favorite is their fresh mozzerella pizza that's thin and crispy!

Abitino has the best pizza i love it plus its very clean.unlike joe's who was on the news for being 1 of n.y.c dirtiest pizza place. i cant wait for there news bleeker location to open.joes is filthy.

I work down the street from Abitino's Times Sq. location -- if you like Dominos or Pizza Hut then you will like this pizza. Chewy, doughy crusts, excessive toppings and run of the mill cheese. This is not a good thing.

Joe's was the best around there (Unless you liked John's wood fired a little west on Bleeker). I have not been there in a long time (used to live on Carmine at Bedford) and haven't seen this new place. Is it still there? Any good?
