Brooklyn Democrat Group To Host Pizza Contest

![]()
The Bridge and the Ridge: When you live in or visit Bay Ridge, there's almost no escaping a view of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (above left), but who'd want to. The Pour House, on the corner of 79th Street and Third Avenue—this reporter's former stamping grounds—will host a pizza contest Tuesday evening.
Bay Ridgebased political club Brooklyn Democrats for Change will be sponsoring a contest to find the best pizza in its neighborhood on Tuesday, April 26. Anyone interested in pizza or change—or both—will want to head to the Pour House (7901 Third Ave., at 79th St.) at 6 p.m. for this event, which is a fundraiser for the group.
Participating pizzerias will be Buon Gusto, Casa Calamari, La Sala, Nino’s, Pepinno's, Pete’s, Positano, Rocco’s, Verrazano, and Vesuvio.
I was asked to judge the pizzas in this contest but regretfully had to decline due to prior commitments. I hope to bring you the results of the contest afterward.
And because Slice is non-partisan, we will give equal time to any Republican groups sponsoring pizza contests. Just send us the press release.

If we have to stick within the confines of Bay Ridge I go with Nino's. Especially their Gran Mama pizza or their Pizza Alla' Vodka. For a quick regular slice I opt with Original's on 69th, just a few blocks from my house.
But I will take the 15 minute ride to West 10th and 86th for L&B over any of them.
As for the Pour House, I haven't been by since it was J&J, but at that time it definitely qualified as a "stomping ground" for me.

I'm happy to report that Nino's and Peppino's tied for first place at last night's Bay Ridge Pizza contests.
And while most members of the Democratic club had a favorite parlor, most of the elected officials on hand, including Marty Markowitz, chose not to alienate potential voters by singling out just one slice.
"Tonight, all the pizzas are winners," said Markowitz.

Rocco's Pizzeria on 5th Avenue between 78th and 79th is theee best pizza in Bay Ridge Bklyn. Don't cofuse them with Rocco's on Fort Hamilton Pkwy because there is definitely no comparison. They were sure to be winners if they would of entered their specialty pies. If they only knew!!! Kudos to Rocco's you are surely the best in Bay Ridge.

The pizza eatting contest was a hit. Rocco's Pizzeria on 5th Avenue between 78th and 79th did a great job setting up a fund raiser for Mercy first the Union of the Angel Guardian Home located on 64th Street and 12th Avenue. This facility has placed children with loving parents for over 100yrs. Joe and Danny of Rocco's Pizzeria holds this facility close to their hearts. They helped raise money and donated money to this charity by holding a pizza eatting contest. It was a hit! Celebrity judges were present. and the winner ate 9 1/2 slices of pizza in 12 minutes !it was great Great job Rocco's Pizzeria!! It was definitely a success and unforgettable. It is clear to see that Rocco's is a family establishment. Which makes the pizza more delicious because it is made with love and care. Hats off to you guys you showed a lot of love and effort for children who really need it.

I love the pizza at Ninos on third Ave.@93rd.St.I lived in Bay Ridge for years, now Iam in south Jersey and I gota tell ya "the pizza sucks" in south Jersey its almost as bad as Manhattan. When Iam in Brooklyn I allways stop for pizza and bread and bring it back to N.J.

Growing up in BayRidge, I swore by Elegante's on 5thave between 69th and ovington. Their squares were untouchable-crispy and not dried out. i remember as a kid in the 1970s, when the neighborhood was still mostly catholic, watching the workers stack empty pizza boxes to the ceiling in preparation for the evening's pizza rush, from the outside because there were too many people at the counter. when i attended xaverian high school, i cheated on Elegantes when i was hanging with my buddies at wooden park on the weekends by really enjoying ninos before having to get home to make curfew. Lentos was a class act and in a league of its own. Again, as a kid, i remember going to eat with their my family waiting what seemed an eternity for our 2 pies-one for my dad the other for my mom, sister and I. There hot sausage was the best. RIP Lentos honorable mentions go to sal's on fouth and 86th st. i no longer live in nyc and miss lots of "my" food but i'm forunate to live in a city with an italian

I grew up in Bay Ridge but have lived in Rumson ,N.J. for the past 20 years and I still come back to Nino's for their Sicilian pie. I usually come home with two pies and freeze the squares for my family. My wife also likes their Grandma slice. Can't get good pizza in NJ. Regards to Lento's - RIP.

There's nothing better than Nino's eggplant parm pizza! The crust is crunchy and tastes delightfully of the olive oil it was baked on and the filling is generous, juicy, and filled w/excellent fried eggplant, cheese, and devine tomato sauce. Don't ever leave, Ninos!!!

I LIVED IN BROOKLYN ALL 30 YEARS OF MY LIFE, HOWEVER THE PAST 3 YEARS I LIVE IN ALABAMA!!! ABSOLUTELY THE WORST ITALIAN FOOD AND PIZZA I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! SERIOUSLY....BUT IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT NINOS IS UP HERE. THAT WAS AND IS STILL VERY MUCH MY FAVORITE PIZZA JOINT. EVERYTIME I COME BACK HOME TO VISIT, I GO TO NINOS AND STOCK UP AS MUCH AS I CAN. NINOS' KEEP IT UP! YOU REALLY ARE THE BEST!
Slice ATLANTISDOLPHIN at 12:11AM on 12/07/06

How has Nino's, especially it's Grandma and thin slice Sicilian's, failed to hit the radar of the pizzarazzi from NY Magazine, Time Out and the NYT's?!
What kind of political/pretentious crap is keeping them from reaching the top 10 in this city. I have lived in NYC my whole life and have eaten miles of Pizza. They make a pie as unique and notable as L&B or Grimaldi's.
Granted the atmosphere is sterile , but the first time I tasted some of the offerings I was weak in the knee's. Totally didn't expect it.
Fantastic, this is really a undiscovered gem. There should be pilgrims to the Grandma pie here the same way we schlep to DiFara's. Take the express into Bay Ridge and get a pie from the old Lento's oven at Canteena, then on to Nino's to stuff your face. Don't miss this one if you love the NY pie.
