Bamnit!

IMG_1668.JPG, blogged to Slice from the Flickr photostream of capndesign

After years of automat deprivation, New Yorkers can once again slot their money into a machine, open a little door, and grab a quick, hot treat. I wish I could say "hot and delicious treat," but the offerings at the newly opened automat Bamn just didn't stack up.

Bamn Pizza Dumplings"Hamburger Matty" (from Slice's sister site, A Hamburger Today) and I stopped by earlier this evening for a quick dinner. We couldn't resist; the place serves a couple different kinds of burgers in addition to "pizza dumplings" (right) and mozzarella sticks.

I was jazzed to try the place. One, because I never had a chance to try the legendary Horn & Hardart Automats of a bygone New York, and, two, because I loved the FEBO automats I encountered in Amsterdam earlier this year.

With great expectations comes great disappointment. I had hopes that the pizza dumplings ($2 for four pieces) would be a slightly more elevated take on the Totino's Pizza Rolls I used to enjoy as an afterschool snack.

Eh. They weren't. For $2, I could have bought an entire box of Totino's and stayed home.

Here's more pix from the trip:

They come with a nondescript marinara sauce for dipping:

Here's the upskirt. Not much of a looker for pizza voyeurs, though:

that's a shame. i enjoyed many a box of pizza rolls as an after school snack.

The blogosphere is almost unanimous about the low quality of the offerings at this joint. Shame. I, for one, am nostalgic for the old Automats. I remember, as a child, my dear Uncle Franz, taking me to the Museum of Modern Art and then to the Automat, where the lion's head that brought forth hot, frothy hot chocolate was my personal favorite.

I also recall the Automat in midtown, which was spacious, had a great old cafeteria ambience, and cheap food. It was replaced by a GAP store.

Kinda weird to read that no one's got those automat thingies over there. Here in the Netherlands we've got them everywhere, not just in Amsterdam, but in almost every fastfood place. They suck though.. lukewarm stuff, things called 'frikandellen' (a bit like a sausage, but with processed leftover meat) behind almost every door, etcetera.
