PrintGood New York Style in North Carolina?
Dear Slice,
Got to your site from the NY Times article on Domino's Brooklyn Pizza. Since I live in NC now, this is what passes for pizza down here. I am originally from Brooklyn and haven't had a good slice of pizza since the last time I was in NY.
I notice that the state of NC doesn't have a link on your site. Does this mean that there is no place in the whole state to get a good slice of pizza? I live near Matthews, which is Southwest of Charlotte.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, although we aren't ready to move back to NY....yet. —Susan V.
Dear Susan,
The Pizza by Location list in the left-hand sidebar indicates that we've got some sort of blog post (review or commentary) from a specific city, state, or country. If there's no link, there's no content for that area.
But don't despair! Just because we don't have a North Carolina link there doesn't mean there's not good pizza to be had in the Tarheel State. Fellow pizzablogger Tom Sliker maintains the New York Pizza Blog, which seeks the best New York–style pizza joints outside of New York City. In North Carolina, he lists:

Anthony’s Pizza: Bryson City
Carlo's Pizza: Charlotte

Susan, if you ever get to the Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill), you might want to try Randy's Pizza in Durham. According to ex-New Yorkers on my staff, it's the closest pie they've had to NY pies. The slices are huge (a 14-inch pizza is considered "small." The crust is thin and chewy and they are no over-sauced.

Susan, I'm in Charlotte - Try Tony's Pizza. http://www.tonyspizza.org/ Most of the locations are in the north/University city region - there is one in Ballantine, too. Their sister chain is Mario's in Winston Salem. I'm from Ct and one of my good friends is from Jersey - and we both agree it's the closest to NY style we've found in the south. Pizza is huge, cheese is fresh mozarella, and they do make pasta/grinders as well.

Try Mozzarrelli's on East 23rd Street between Park Avenue South and Madison Avenue. They have spelt crust pizza as well as other whole grain pizza crust pizzas. I have not tried them all but the spelt crust was very good.

Two Guys Pizza & Grill in Hendersonville (Western North Carolina, near Asheville) offers respectable pizza. It won't make anyone forget Lombardi's or Tontonno's in their prime, but the ingredients are all freshly made, and the crust has some flavor and crispiness. Nice place, too.
